Rooftops
poetry by : Barry Arriola

Like sweet dreams not forgotten;
on these rooftops reminiscing,
each night hard of sleeping,
as odd as it seem,
infinity is what i mean.

Like sunrise and sunsets,
that's what i felt the moment we met.
shy hellos and long goodbyes
each day just seems to pass by,

just like rooftops so high
so close...
to touch the sky.

AUTHOR NOTES :

This was my first ever published poem way back in my third year of high school.I was part of our Student Council, then known as the Brotherhood of Senior Core Officers or B.O.S.C.O Council. As part of being an officer, we had to take part of seminars and trainings, and this one particular workshop happened to unleash the Shakespeare within me. (LOL) That workshop was dubbed as the "USELESS Workshop" and was run by Cebu's famous song writer, Mr. Jude Gitamondoc.

This started out to be an activity which ended up as a competition. The funny thing about this was, we were made to draw from a list of random words (such as ice cream, windows, toothpaste, roads, and other stuff) and we had to write a poem about the one we had picked.

I never thought to myself as a writer then, nor did I care about poetry. But somehow, I managed to weave rhymes and ended up with this piece. A lot of poems were good, and luckily mine was picked to be read in front of my fellow officers. I didn't know what came to me the moment I read my piece, but for one thing, it felt good. And I knew that from that moment, that writing was something that I'll be good for me.

I've never had a "rooftop" moment but I guess this wasn't drawn from actual experience, but from an emotion of longing and reminiscing.

We've all had our share of nostalgia, and that my dear friends,  makes us human.
